How do I become a librarian?


To become a librarian, you'll need a combination of education, experience, skills.

Education

  • You'll need to obtain an undergraduate degree (in any major) that will help you acquire skills in research, writing, technology, and communication.
  • Most librarian positions also require a graduate degree, a Master's in Library and Information Science (an MLIS or MLS). You'll want to choose a program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). These programs typically take two years and offer a variety of possible specializations.
  • Some positions in academic libraries may also require a second master's degree in another discipline.
  • Some kinds of librarians may need to have a specific additional degree (such as a JD for law librarians) and/or state certification (for school librarians).

Experience

  • While pursuing your education, consider seeking part-time work in libraries, internships, and assistantships.
  • Reach out to librarians at your institution to learn more about what they do and how they can help you on your career journey. 
  • After completing your undergraduate degree, consider applying for entry-level roles such as library assistant.
  • Consider participating in or joining professional organizations such as the American Library Association.

Skills

  • Ability to locate, evaluate, and synthesize information from a wide range of source.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with patrons, colleagues, and others.
  • Familiarity with library systems like cataloging software, discovery systems, databases, and digital tools.
  • Customer service skills to patiently and effectively assist people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Some librarians need to be able to teach instruction sessions, especially in academic or school library settings.
  • Skills in organizing information, managing records, and handling multiple tasks and projects.
  • Adaptability and commitment to lifelong learning.
